The National Youth Agency (NYA) secured additional funding for youth work this week.

This was announced at the Despatch Box in the House of Commons government-led debate on the role and sufficiency of youth work.

The new funding includes provision for the renewal of the youth work curriculum and qualifications, to be carried out by NYA. Further funding will support bursaries to boost the take-up of youth work qualifications and placements. This is an essential first step in workforce development to arrest the decline in the number of qualified, professional youth workers and skilled volunteers. It supports a strengthened national body for youth work, fulfilled by the NYA.

NYA Chief Executive Leigh Middleton said:

“Today’s ministerial announcement of new funding is just a start in the renewal of youth work and investment in youth services. The Government take-up of recommendations from the cross-party report led by NYA is a timely boost to the youth sector, working together to secure further investment in the forthcoming government Spending Review.

As a new government is formed there is a huge appetite for greater optimism and a positive agenda for our country’s young people. We look forward to working with the Government and local authorities on the review of statutory guidance and with MPs from all parties to ensure access to quality youth services in their local areas.”
