NYA is going to the Labour and Conservative Party Conferences. We’ll be at the Youth Zone, alongside other big youth organisations like Girlguiding, Brook, Centrepoint and UK Youth, so come and say hello.
We’ll be speaking at a number of roundtables and fringe events and meeting with MPs and councillors, raising our concerns on a range of issues including:
- Apprenticeships: Better signposting from school and better careers advice for young people. Greater support for young people once they take up an apprenticeship. New funding proposals indicate they will impact negatively on disadvantaged young people and benefit older, better off apprenticeships.
- Youth work: What is the future of youth services? Some local authorities are starting to invest once again in universal youth services, as opposed to targeted. Does this open up the debate once more?
- Brexit: Young people need to be part of the discussions. Negotiations should be ‘youth proofed’.
- Social action: Volunteering benefits young people but for harder to reach young people to able to benefit, youth work support is required. We need to get better at recognising the value of ‘distance travelled’ – young people don’t have the same starting point and recognise small but significant progress.
