York Young Researchers Project - Young Researcher Network 2010/11 grant winners
The York Young Researchers Project is being supported by Young People’s Services and links to the development of the Child Poverty Strategy in the City, which is being lead by the Yor-OK Children’s Trust. The project arose out of a consultation with the Youth Council on the new Child Poverty strategy: a group of young people who are interested in the area have come together to find out more about what young people in the City think about child poverty and the proposed approaches to tackling it. Findings from the research will be taken to the Child Poverty strategy Group, and will be incorporated in the strategy, which will be launched in March 2011.
The Child Poverty Strategy is being developed in response to Child Poverty Act, which, is seeking to achieve a fair and inclusive society where every child is given the best start in life and an equal opportunity to fulfil his or her potential. The Act introduces new duties on Local Authorities, among which is the requirement to prepare a joint child poverty strategy. Young People’s involvement is embedded within service planning and delivery, and the work of the young researchers will enable the Local Authority to incorporate young people’s views into the development of the strategy.
