Isle of Wight - Young Researcher Network 2010/11 grant winners

The plan for delivery of this project is designed essentially to explore young people’s involvement in developing council services for children and young people and involves research led by young people, supported by professionals to explore the following research question ‘What social activities are available on the Isle of Wight for teenagers with a learning disability or difficulty?’

The young people and their research will inform the proposals to reorganise the youth service so that it is more accessible and supports more social activities that are available on the Isle of Wight for teenagers with a learning disability or difficulty.

Swindon Borough Council - Young People’s NEET and positive activities spotlight group

The group project is to identify a random sample of approx 20 young people have become NEET within the last month. The group will explore and assess the experiences of these young people from the point at which they became NEET in the context of the quality of services provided to them by Swindon Borough Council Youth Support Services.

The group will consider:

  • The reasons behind the young person becoming NEET
  • How long it takes for the young person to be picked up/contacted by the integrated youth support service.
  • What support is provided by the youth support services to the young person concerned
  • How frequently does the youth service make contact with the young person whilst they are NEET?
  • Is the young person sent information on EET opportunities?
  • From a young person’s perspective what is the quality of targeted youth support?
  • Is the young person supported into targeted youth support?

Outcome:

  1. A thorough assessment and analysis of the quality of Integrated Youth Support Services from a NEET young person’s perspective. This will involve assessing current systems and process which are in place to support young people who are currently NEET.
  2. Improve young people’s participation and involvement in the design, development and delivery of the youth service.
  3. Young people to develop research skills, providing a small pool of established young researchers who are able to carry out other pieces of research in the future.
