Summary

VOXX Magazine is a youth-led media volunteering project based in Grimsby and funded by the governments v scheme. The project produces a bi-monthly magazine, VOXX, which is distributed free across North East Lincolnshire and beyond. The magazine is entirely produced by young people, for young people staff merely offer support, advice and training. We have over 100 volunteers aged 16-25 years, including a full-time volunteer editor and sub-editor.

Details

At Voxx Magazine we are currently getting young people involved in contributing to our Hear by Right Map and Plan.

One of our full time young volunteers is now consulting with her peers about the plan. After giving her own feedback on the document she wrote up questions in terms she thought her peers would understand and respond to, requesting feedback on each section we’d completed. As soon as we’ve got some more responses we’ll start adding them to the map and plan.

At the same time we are also doing a full consultation with our readers to see how we can improve the magazine and attract more volunteers.

Current Level using Hear by Right: Emerging
Our Main Strengths: We are great at recruiting young people, enabling them to participate and encouraging everyone to take part. We have got a very accessible project which can be easily adapted to meet the needs of anyone who wants to join in. Through our free magazine, we have got a fantastic tool for facilitating young people to spread information about what's important to them, to other young people in the area. Through marketing, feedback and consultation, they are then able to start debates, research topics and develop local campaigns. We've built up great links with other local youth organisations and partners like the NHS community education team and local schools and colleges.
Our Main Weaknesses: Our admin systems need to be a lot slicker and more efficient. We need to ensure that information is more readily-available to young people and in a format which is accessible to them. We need to be better at recording and evidencing our participation work
What we can offer to other in the region: Advice on recruitment and retention, accessibility, and getting the word out to young people!

Mapping and Planning Tool

Hear by Right is based around the Mapping and Planning tool. This website provides a space for organisations to share their maps and plans using the tool, both in order to share details of what they are doing locally, and to promote learning between organisations.
