Demos sees big role for supermarkets in regenerating poor communities

It argues that the presence of mainstream retailers can encourage a sense of pride, raise aspirations and create jobs.  The report also proposes the election of 'micro-mayors'  to help resolve problems such as anti-social behavour, and another suggestion to allow local people to take over services such as Sure Start and health centres.
