Research Reviews Identify Best Practice for Children and Young People
28 September 2010
The Centre for Excellence and Outcomes in Children and Young People’s Services (C4EO) has published three research reviews on the topics of reducing alcohol consumption by young people, the impact of targeted youth support and engaging young people in positive activities.
The National Youth Agency undertook the research review into engaging young people in positive activities. It found that service user engagement holds the key in all aspects of provision, including design and promotion, for successful engagement in positive activities and targeted youth support programmes.
The research review into reducing alcohol consumption by young people undertaken by the Institute of Education identified a number of programmes that deliver positive results for young people.
The findings identified that alcohol programmes that are promising, are those that work with families to improve familial relationships, help pupils learn about alcohol and how to resist alcohol and drugs, improve the quality of young people’s experience of school, and provide enjoyable out-of-school activities that impact on their sense of achievement.
The review into the impact of targeted youth support was undertaken by Matrix Solutions and identified that targeted youth support programmes have unintended consequences, as well as fulfilling the primary aim of the intervention. These include impact on the confidence of and sense of autonomy of participants.
Research summaries, including the Directors’ summary – designed for Directors of Children’s Services and other strategic leaders - can be downloaded from the C4EO website.
A data tool has also been developed which compares area outcomes against national targets, so you can see how your area is doing.
Other materials on the topics covered by the research reviews will be available in sprint 2011.
