Cultivating Young Leaders to Bring About Change

Our society faces a new generation of challenges, and leadership skills are vital in enabling them to succeed. A new publication from The Youth of Today reveals how we can cultivate young leaders to take the lead and bring about change.

Today, The Youth of Today launches Challenge and Lead, a new publication that offers young people a five stage plan to support leadership and challenge.

Developed by the National Youth Agency (NYA), the resource will help young people identify issues that are important to them, organise a campaign, challenge decision makers and bring about change. It has been developed through work with young people across the country and builds on the National Youth Agency’s Hear by Right standards and Act by Right practice. It is available as a free download from both The Youth of Today’s website and the NYA’s website.

The resource’s five-stage plan provides activities on forming a working relationship within the group; identifying issues to explore; formulating an action plan; developing and delivering a campaign; and reviewing what’s changed. It has been developed in conjunction with a group of young people making up The Youth of Today’s Youth Leadership Team who continue to use, review and develop the Challenge and Lead resource moving forward.

Maxine Green, NYA Associate who has worked with young people to produce the resource, said: “Challenge and Lead can be used by professionals working with young people, peer educators or groups of young people with some experience of working together. We hope they will find it useful in inspiring and enabling leadership.”

Groups using Challenge and Lead will gain a national profile for their campaign by having it included on the NYA website and in Children and Young People Now magazine. All young people participating will also receive a certificate.

Challenge and Lead is the culmination of over a year’s work done by the NYA for The Youth of Today with young people and organisations across England.
