NYA Chief Executive Comments on the Report into Last Summer's Riots
28 March 2012
The National Youth Agency has welcomed the release of the official report into last summer’s Riots (After the Riots – the final report of the Riots Communities and Victims Panel). Chief Executive Fiona Blacke comments:
“We know great youth work has a transformational effect on the lives of young people, particularly those who have been failed by the rest of the system.
Councils are having to make hard choices due to central government settlement and it is certainly true many youth services are facing disproportionate cuts as a result.
Despite this we also know many councils are working hard to ensure that they achieve ‘better with less’.
NYA is working with Councils to ensure that however they structure or deliver their offer, youth work and youth workers are well positioned to support young people and the communities in which they live.
At NYA we believe transforming the relationship between young people and their communities is a role youth workers can play. We agree with the Panel that together we need to find ways to resource this.”
