No phone, no net: why rural children are leaving

The lack of mobile phone reception and broadband coverage in rural areas has become the key issue in dissuading young people from staying on in the countryside according to the chair of the Commission for Rural Communities. At the end of June 2009, 40 per cent of 16- 24-year-olds in rural areas were unemployed or economically inactive, the report found.
