Getting in touch

The National Youth Agency (NYA), in partnership with National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS), The Young Foundation and Social Enterprise Coalition have formed a consortium, named Catalyst, to fulfil the role of Startegic partner for young people with the Department of Education.

An Institute for Youth Work

The NYA has a strong strategic engagement across the work programme, with a lead role in taking forward the Workforce strand. As part of this work the NYA is exploring the potential for and role of an Institute for Youth Work as an independent body owned by its membership, giving voice to the sector and securing engagement across the whole sector.

A Stimulus Paper on Professionalism and Professional Bodies

The Institute for Learning developed a short paper in April 2009. This addresses language and definitions around professionalism and professional bodies. Although not directly related to Youth Work it is an interesting contextual read.

Get Involved in Consultation

The first phase of consultation will run between 26th September and 30th November 2011. This is primarily aimed at establishing the level of support the sector has for an Institute for Youth Work. There are three main ways to participate in the consultation process.

1) Use the documents linked above to inform your responses to the online survey

2) Attend an IYW consultation event on 8th November 2011 at the National Youth Agency - book your free place through the NYA online booking form

3) Facilite your own consultatoin event with your networks using the material linked to above and these consultation questions

The purpose of this first phase of works is to ask the sector whether they support, in principle, the development of an Institute for Youth Work (IYW). If the response to this is positive then the second phase of consultation will explore the detail behind all aspects of this from principles and mission through governance, functions, services and membership.

The consultation questions seek to gain a broad overview of the level of support for the principle for an IYW and gauge at this stage the sectors thoughts on what would be the founding principles, functions and services and membership parameters. This will then help shape future consultation.

To ensure that this consultation is robust, Catalyst need the help and support of the sector. The funding for this phase of works is limited as it is mainly to establish the mandate for an IYW. This dictates that the main consultation needs to be through an online survey. In addition the NYA is running a consultation event on the 8th November at the NYA office in Leicester. If you would like to see details of this and book on to the event click here.

As an additional method to extend reach across the sector, we hope that organisations and individuals seek opportunities to facilitate a short session to discuss the main questions posed and co-ordinate and send the main responses through the Survey Monkey system. These web pages and supporting documents may be helpful to circulate prior to a meeting or event to give those participating some back ground information. A copy of the Survey Monkey questions to facilitate a session can be downloaded from here.

If at anytime you experience problems with the Survey Monkey form or feel that a word format would facilitate the feeding back of views then a copy can be downloaded here.

All responses need to be returned to the NYA by the 30th November 2011.
