Online time 'is good for teens'

Surfing the internet, playing games and 'hanging out' on social networks are important for young people's development, a large US study of online use has revealed.

More than 800 young people and parents took part in the study, part of a three-year $50m (£31m) digital media and learning project sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation. The was to provide an 'ethnographical view of how young people use social media to socialise, learn and relax'. Researchers concluded that connecting online with friends via social networks such as MySpace and Facebook was where young people now 'hang out, compared to the usual public places and that the internet provided a core group the opportunity to explore their own creativity and 'take a deep dive into a subject.
