New strategy will help promote healthier lifestyles

The National Youth Agency has launched its new health strategy with the vision that all young people are healthy, enjoy good physical and mental health and are supported to adopt healthier lifestyles and develop greater emotional resilience.

Richard McKie, Senior Development Officer in the Youth Work for Health team at The NYA, said there would be a four-prong programme working towards achieving this vision, including promoting young people's influence, voice and place in the determination of their own health needs.

The agency would also strive to improve the practice, programmes and services offered to young people by the non-formal education and health sectors and promote the development of health education policy based on an improved understanding of adolescence and health and the contribution of non-formal education and youth work approaches to achieving that.

The final strand is to build the capacity of children's trusts and their partners to deliver improved health outcomes for young people at the local level.
