MyPlace
Following the launch of myplace – the new programme delivered by the Big Lottery Fund to invest £190m of government capital funding in ‘world class youth facilities’, the Department for Children, Schools and Families asked The NYA to undertake some work on recent capital investment in youth facilities. This included a survey which sought information about funding for youth facilities in each local authority area between 2005-08, and their progress towards developing integrated strategies for youth facilities.
The DCSF also asked The NYA to develop a series of case studies on youth facilities to help people applying to myplace learn from the experience of others. All facilities featured must meet the key myplace criteria to improve outcomes for young people, particularly the most disadvantaged: young people’s real participation; providing exciting and safe places for young people; more young people taking part in positive activities; extending access to information, advice and support; and strong partnership working between local authorities, third, private and public sector partners.
All the case studies are available at www.nya.org.uk/myplace. A final report on this work, drawing together the survey findings and learning from the case studies, will be produced at the end of September 2008.
Improving transport provision
The NYA is working with young people, local authorities and transport providers to develop guidance for Children’s Trusts on how improving local transport provision can support young people’s access to positive activities. This work will be completed by the end of December 2008.
Transport and access to positive activities
The NYA has been commissioned and funded by the Department for Children Schools and Families to develop guidance for local authorities on transport and access to positive activities.

Addressing safety issues
1. Context – what this is about
The DCSF have asked The NYA to produce a briefing paper or position statement on safe access to positive activities, which will include tackling bullying in the non-formal sector. This is to take forward the commitments in Aiming High for Young People and the Aiming High Implementation Plan, which refer to the statutory guidance on securing access to positive activities and the Staying Safe Action Plan.
2. The briefing/position statement will cover
- Scoping the territory
- Identifying the issues in it
- Looking at what has been done – policies, practice, resources including training
- Working out what are the gaps – and how might they be filled
- Progress to date
Colleagues from third sector organisations, local authorities and the LGA took the thinking forward at The NYA Policy Forum on 9 July. A summary of the report from this meeting will be available on the website shortly. The briefing/position statement is due to be written and published by 30 September 2008.
