Transport – Access to Positive Activities

The NYA has been commissioned and funded by the Department for Children Schools and Families to develop guidance for local authorities on transport and access to positive activities.

We know that young people identify a number of barriers to using public transport, including cost, availability, reliability safety, and attitudes of transport staff. This affects their access to and choices for education, employment, and leisure activities.

The NYA has been commissioned by The DCSF to work with stakeholders with an interest in transport for young people to identify barriers to access, solutions, and good practice from around the country. This work is cited in the Aiming High for Young People Implementation Plan:

We have asked The NYA to work with young people, local authorities and transport providers on how improving local transport provision can support young people’s access to positive activities.”

This information will feed into guidance on transport and access to positive activities for Children’s Trusts, local authority transport planners and providers of positive activities.

We have convened a working group to oversee the development of the guidance and case studies which includes the UK Youth Parliament and the National Children’s Bureau, transport planners from rural and urban authorities, young people, the Youth Inclusion project, DCSF, and others.

Case Studies of implemented solutions for improving young people’s access to transport

As the work develops we will be adding to these case studies:
