Marjory Hester's NYA profile

Marjory Hester

Marjory trained as a teacher and youth worker and entered full-time youth work after a period in teaching, becoming a Youth Adviser in Rotherham. Marjory then moved to become one of four County Youth and Community Officers in Buckinghamshire, before being appointed Principal Youth and Community Officer for the London Borough of Hillingdon and, subsequently, Assistant Director (Community Services) for the London Borough of Havering. Since taking early retirement in 2000, she has worked as a self-employed management consultant.

During her youth service career Marjory was appointed a member of a number of regional, national and international working groups dealing with issues about the needs of young people and the value of youth work, and raising those issues with government. These included a working group for the Council of Europe and the setting up of a ministerial conference on youth work. She is now gratified to be working in a climate where the value of youth work is more widely appreciated than ever before and she feels that it is essential that we get the right balance of quality and performance.

Marjory is thoroughly enjoying consultancy work and has been dealing not only with youth work and young people's issues, but with the regeneration of deprived communities and capacity building within those communities, helping people to strongly determine and deliver their own futures. As a Neighbourhood Renewal Adviser with the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit, Marjory has assisted with the strategic development of local partnerships in various parts of the country and have undertaken many pieces of work with local youth services, the voluntary youth sector, Connexions Services and partnerships. It goes without saying, therefore, that Marjory is delighted by the National Youth Agency's development of a consultancy team that has strength and depth, and she is greatly looking forward to working with the team and colleagues in the field.

Marjory believes that consultants, who are able to home in on issues without having responsibilities for people or budgets, are well placed to help both the maintained and voluntary sectors focus on solutions, problems and issues.
