Youth Matters

The government has published (8 March 2006) its response to the Youth Matters consultation. It contains a range of proposals that will require children's trusts, local authorities and the voluntary sector to work together to provide 'something to do, somewhere to go, someone to talk to' for young people.

YOUTH MATTERS: NEXT STEPS

It covers proposals to improve information, advice and guidance provision and to implement further the Russell Commission proposals.

The proposals include:

The role of local authorities

There is now a statutory duty for local authorities to ensure that young people have access to a range of positive activities. The national standards will include access to two hours per week of sporting activity and access to two hours of other constructive activities in clubs in clubs, youth groups and classes.

Volunteering

The volunteering proposals being developed by the Russell Commission Implementation Body are reinforced in the document. The peer mentoring schemes outlined in the pre-budget report are being implemented. From Spring 2006, organisations will be invited to bid to deliver a range of volunteering opportunities as the first stage in commissioning provision.

Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG)

Schools and colleges will be encouraged to work in partnership with children's trusts to agree new arrangements for delivering IAG. New quality standards will be introduced to ensure that young people are aware of all routes open to them.
