Professional Validation

The NYA ensures the quality and development of youth work training at all levels in England. We achieve this through validation and annual monitoring of professional qualifications and endorsement of youth support worker qualifications. The work is progressed and overseen by The NYA Education and Training Standards Committee (ETS) which makes recommendations on courses recognised to the Joint Negotiating Committee for Youth and Community Workers.

Professional Validation of HE Programmes

The National Youth Agency has published Requirements to describe the process through which Higher Education Institutions can seek formal professional validation of their programmes of education and training in youth work. Such programmes would then confer professionally qualified status for youth workers in England. The requirements, effective from 1 April 2007, are in three booklets:

Validation Book 1 (2008)Introduction to Professional Validation and Curriculum Requirements (Book 1 of 3)

Validation Book 2 (2008)Professional Validation and Monitoring Process (Book 2 of 3)

Validation Book 3 (2008)Professional Validation Criteria and Evidence Requirements (Book 3 of 3)

Individual Recognition for Youth and Community Work Professional Qualifications Gained Outside the UK and Ireland

The system for individual recognition is currently being revised by the Joint UK and Ireland Education and Training Standards Committee. The new system is due to be approved by the Joint ETS in October 2007.

Non-UK or Irish Nationals who wish to check if their qualification in Youth and Community Work, or its equivalent, awarded in another country is recognised in the UK and Ireland will then be able to apply to the appropriate national body to seek recognition. For England this will be The National Youth Agency.

Those wishing to register their interest in applying for individual recognition in the interim may leave their details with Linda Macilwraith, Administrator: Standards and Workforce Development.

Enquiries for Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales will be forwarded to the appropriate national body.
