YRN Objectives

This network will value, support, and encourage research led by young people. It will empower young people and raise their voice and influence on matters that affect their lives.

The YRN Objectives are:

  • To establish a core network of organisations that share experience and provide mutual support to build capacity to take on and deliver quality research led by young people.
  • To promote and support research carried out by young people and build the capacity of young people to handle commissions and work with clients.
  • To de-mystify research, making research processes understandable and available to young people who might not otherwise have access to this knowledge.
  • To coordinate research efforts to maximize on the range and diversity of research projects and promote the developments of research methodologies and knowledge.
  • To support effective communication between young researchers and policy makers, locally and nationally, and circulate research findings with the aim of bringing about change.
  • To actively encourage organisations and bodies to involve young people and their research. To help forge and develop research partnerships between national organisations and young people led organisations.
  • To encourage the ethical contribution of young people to research and discourage potential tokenism and exploitation of young researchers.
  • To build a pool of knowledge and expertise about young people led research that will be freely and widely available.

YRN Objectives - Young People's version:

  • To bring together organisations to form a network that will share their experiences and offer each other support to increase the amount of quality research which is led by young people.
  • To promote and support research carried out by young people and increase young people’s ability to undertake research.
  • To make research processes understandable for young people so that they understand different types of research.
  • To make sure that the research produced by network partners is linked and that they can share what they have learned widely.
  • To support young people and organisations to share their research with policy makers, locally and nationally, aiming to bring about change.
  • To ensure that young researchers are safe and well supported and that they can decide to be involved at a level and in a way that suits them.
  • To build up knowledge and expertise about young people’s research and make it freely and widely available.
