Record A and A* results as schools refine entries

Record GCSE results were reported yesterday with the proportion receiving the highest grades rising at the fastest rate in almost 20 years.

The average number of GCSE's taken has dropped with suggestions that schools are opting for more vocational qualifications or fewer GCSE's. Some people have however warned that this trend may see young people at high performing schools at an advantage as universities and employers may value the traditional GCSE qualification more highly. The government is also accused of causing unnecessary damage on underperforming schools as they make dramatic improvements.
