United Nations International Year of Youth – launching on 12 August 2010

National Youth Agency chief executive Fiona Blacke has welcomed the start of the United Nation’s International Year of Youth, saying:
“Young people bring tremendous value to society, a value that is sometimes overlooked and taken for granted. What better way to showcase their invaluable role and inspire organisations to increase their participation with young people than by celebrating their achievements for a whole year – we are delighted such a celebration has now kicked off.
“The global recession brings particular challenges for young people trying to make the transition into adult life. Not only is the International Year of Youth a fantastic opportunity to celebrate young people, but also highlight to politicians and the public at large that our job is to nurture our young people – they are the only future we have!”
Ms Blacke adds: “The National Youth Agency is bringing back Youth Work Week this year which will support the International Year of Youth. Running between 1 and 7 November 2010, this year’s theme is ‘Celebrating Great Youth Work’ where we will be showcasing the amazing achievements of youth work in transforming young lives, especially for the most vulnerable of young people.”
