Engagement Network Blog - Alex Boocock, 17 from Bradford

16 August 2010

Alex Boocock  is 17, classed as NEET and from Bradford

Tell us about your experience of being NEET

I felt there weren’t enough opportunities for young people in Bradford to gain employment.  Young people do not have enough access to places to gain jobs.

How did you get involved in the Engagement Network project?

I was invited to the Engagement Network project by my key worker Emma and selected during my 12 week NEET programme.

How has it been? Has being involved in the project helped you? If so how?

It was a brilliant experience to meet other NEET young people from other cities and to find that they face similar issues to me.

Tell us where you’re at now… what are you up to and what would you like to do in the future – what are your aims and ambitions?

I’m a Young Mentor for new NEET young people in Bradford continuing with Bradford’s NEET programme with a key worker and Inclusion Team.  I’m starting E2E in September and want to continue with my self-development through gaining my sailing qualification.

What would you like your group to achieve in your area?

To make a presentation to lead professionals in Bradford and decision-makers to help write policies -and to make them aware of what it is like for young people to be NEET in Bradford.

  1. Great to hear of such a success story! Certainly a case of young people taking their futures into their own hands, well done Alex! Chris O'Brien, The Potential Organisation
